Greg Baines is a local Gunning artist/author and began painting regularly in China.
“The energy of the contemporary art I saw there inspired and intimidated me. I helped form an Art Cooperative in Shanghai of like minded artists to use our work to fund book delivery to poorer regions of the country. The shows were in living places- bars, cafes, restaurants. Busy vibrant places. I find painting compliments my writing, the words inform the paint and vice versa. The processs of writing has shaped the process of painting- editing, re working, covering and revealing. I'm happiest when the painting reveals something of a past in it, shadows, textures and hints at something just under the surface”.
